Most people own a pair of crew socks: a style also known as crew cut socks that rises to the mid-calf, with a ribbed cuff at the top of the sock that holds them in place for everyday activities.
They’re incredibly versatile for all kinds of weather and occasions, and as we know, can be a great vehicle for adding personality to any outfit. An ode to our hero product, this guide covers crew sock design, how crew socks should fit, and when to reach for them so that you can find the perfect pair.
Crew Sock Length: Where They Actually Land
What is a crew sock length? Our crew sock length depends on the size you order, but they should always hit around the mid-calf. Our small size is designed to rise 25cm from the heel, our medium should rise 28cm, and our large should rise 30cm. However, the same pair can sit differently on different people based on height and shoe size, so there is always some room for variance.

Longer than ankle socks and shorter than knee-high socks, crew socks are the most versatile pick for everyday wear. That balance of coverage and comfort is why they’re such a popular choice.
How Crew Socks Should Fit
Length is only half the equation. A well-fitting crew sock should fit without being too tight and does these three things:
The Cuff
The cuff should stay in place without leaving deep marks. If there are noticeable marks, you might need to size up. If your crew socks are slipping throughout the day, they might be stretched out, or you might need a smaller size.
The Heel and Toe
The heel pocket should sit on the heel without having to stretch the sock, not below or above it. You shouldn’t be able to feel any bunching at the toe seam. If you do with shoes on, you might need to size down.
Getting the Size Right
To make sure you’re getting the right size, you can always reference our size guide! Here’s what we recommend:
- Fit for US Men’s Shoe Sizes: Small (4-8), Medium (8-13), Large (13+)
- Fit for US Women’s Shoe Sizes: Small (5-9), Medium (9-14), Large (14+)

When to Wear Crew Socks
Crew socks work with almost all types of footwear, which is why we have the most variety in that style! But when to wear crew socks is really up to your occasion and personal taste. Here are some of the most common ways to style crew socks:
- Everyday lounging at home
- Wearing with boots or high tops to help prevent blisters or keep your lower legs warm
- Office wear with dressier outfits and shoes (they look great with loafers!)
- Wedding attire for the groom or groomsmen (we love them as a way to add personality and a little story to your special day)
- Hiking (our socks are padded for extra comfort on the trail, and our team has tested them!)
- Any time you want your socks to be part of the outfit
When to Choose a Different Length
Some occasions will call for a shorter sock, like if the weather is warm, you’re staying active, or you're looking to hide your socks with your outfit. For that, we’d recommend an ankle sock.
You can dive into crew vs ankle sock recommendations on how to choose between the two.
What Are Our Crew Socks Made Of?
Our patterned crew socks are made of a blend of GOTS- and Fairtrade-certified organic cotton, recycled polyester, recycled polyamide, polyamide, and elastane. Pairs in our Comfort Crew socks line are made with 80% GOTS and Fairtrade-certified organic cotton, 18% recycled polyester, and 2% elastane. While their exact composition is different for the styles, the materials are chosen to prioritize a soft and breathable feel that keeps your feet dry and comfortable, making them an easy choice for everyday wear, while also keeping the environment and the people involved in manufacturing safe.
The organic cotton we use is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Fairtrade America. Fairtrade America sets social, economic, and environmental standards that protect workers and support sustainable development, and GOTS tracks products from raw material processing all the way to final distribution, incorporating strict social, environmental, and human rights requirements. We use polyamide, recycled polyester, recycled polyamide, and elastane in a delicate balance to maintain a comfortable level of stretch and longevity of the sock, while also using as little as possible to reduce microplastic shedding while washing.
How to Care for Crew Socks
The hardest part of caring for your socks is not losing them in the washing machine! Here is what we recommend to keep your socks lasting as long as possible:
- Machine wash with cold water (that’s better for the environment, too!).
- Tumble dry on low heat or air dry.
- Do not bleach or iron the socks. Chemicals and excess heat will damage the synthetic fibers that maintain stretch.
- Fold crew socks instead of rolling them together to avoid stretching the cuff.
